These karst rock peaks are one of the most famous images of China. In the winter, the Li River is very small, so our boat ride was shorter than usual. But still, it was a three hour cruise past these amazing peaks. And while it was cold, we lucked out with the rain and mist, getting that classic effect you see so often in Chinese art. So every so often we'd brave the boatdeck in the rain, take some pictures, and sneak back down with the rest of the tourists (mostly Chinese, some Japanese and Western laowai). The meal wasn't too bad, and we kept warm with a snake-infused fortified rice wine. Yes, it's true, it was a huge jug of 38% clear energy, warmed up, with a snake floating on the bottom. I actually liked the taste! Here is my Guilin portfolio.
Guilin itself is fairly poor, compared to Beijing. There are no cranes lining the skyline here. At least 40% of the population is "minority", AKA not Han. Tourism is the big thing here. We spent Friday night seeing "Impression Liu Sanjie", an enormous production by Zhang Yimou, one of China's great directors. It is a gigantic production, literally using a bend in the river as the stage, and the mountains as a backdrop, and hundreds of actors in the cast. Gorgeous imagery.
So ends my first China excursion!

Hi, Richard! Bekah, here! This is terrific! I'm so excited to hear all about China and see some fabulous photos, too! keep 'em coming! Brian forwarded your question about widening the post area to me since I use Blogger, too.
ReplyDeleteThe best answer I can give you is this: you need to access the template through your Blogger Dashboard and mess with some code. It isn't difficult, but it will require some research on your part as to which parts of the code to change. You can look here
for that. Short of template-tinkering, I would simply go with a different template...also I think I remember reading somewhere in a help forum that you can't properly alter THIS template's post column because it is coded as some sort of graphic, or something. It comes out all weird. The template called "Minima" seems to have the most writing area. Yes, it is a seriously boring template, but you can mess with the colors and fonts in he "Layout" feature and avoid HTML altogether. It's super easy to upgrade your template, and nothing will get lost or deleted when you change it. There's even a "back-up" feature just in case!
Hope this helps!
(ps: you should also probably change your comments setting to include "word verification". You haven't gotten any comment spam yet, but with a gmail account you will likely get tons. Word verification will nip this in the bud)
